OVER PORTUPRAIA
When I first set foot in Portugal in the early seventies, it was love at first sight. I simply soaked up the unique combination of sun, sand, culture and nature. Portugal at the time was still a fledgling holiday destination. Today I continue to visit the country which has had such an impact on my life and continue to enjoy the experience immensely; discovering something new to do and see on every occasion.
Portugal boasts endless villages and towns and offers a wealth of cultural highlights. The banks of the Douro river for example are home to the famous traditional port wine production and in the Algarve you can stroll on infinite white beaches which stretch off to the horizon. Then there is the unique urban experience that is Lisbon, also known as ‘the white city’, where you can listen to the famous fado music against a magically romantic backdrop. Portugal’s famous cities are balanced by her sparsely populated Alentejo region, where among the rolling fields and olive trees, historic treasures and whitewashed houses you will find space to breathe. With its breathtaking, mountainous regions and stunning coast line, Portugal is guaranteed to both surprise and delight you.
During the nineteen eighties I was fortunate enough in my previous job to spend a great deal of time in Portugal. In this period I was regularly requested by friends to fix them up with holiday accommodation, something special and different from what was being offered by the high street agencies. This I just loved doing. So much so, that I decided to make a go of it as a full time business, making the pleasures of both the well and lesser known parts of Portugal more easily accessible for people as their holidays destinations. Portupraia was born.
